The Initial Referral

Charlie was referred to The Suddy Dog Rehabilitation Centre for ongoing left hind limb lameness and suspected cruciate disease.

Prior to attending our centre, Charlie had already undergone hydrotherapy and physiotherapy elsewhere since August 2025. While the focus had understandably been on the suspected cruciate issue, we wanted to take a fresh look at Charlie's overall condition and determine what would have the biggest impact on his long-term mobility.

A Different Approach

Many rehabilitation programmes would have focused solely on the suspected cruciate disease.

We chose a different route.

After reviewing Charlie's assessment, gait analysis and body condition, we concluded that weight loss should become the primary focus of his rehabilitation programme.

There were two important reasons for this:

1. Less Weight Means Less Pressure

Every kilogram of excess weight increases the load passing through the joints.

By reducing Charlie's weight, we could:

  • Reduce stress on his knees

  • Improve comfort and mobility

  • Lower the risk of future cruciate injury

  • Improve overall quality of life

2. Preparing for the Future

If Charlie's cruciate ligament were to rupture in the future, his weight would significantly increase the risks associated with surgery and recovery.

Helping Charlie become fitter and healthier now would put him in a much stronger position should surgical intervention ever become necessary.

Building a Realistic Weight Loss Plan

One of the most important parts of Charlie's rehabilitation journey involved working closely with his owners.

We sat down together and discussed everything Charlie received throughout the day, including:

  • Main meals

  • Treats

  • Supplements

  • Table scraps

  • Biscuits

  • Any extra snacks given between meals

We always ask owners to be completely honest during this process.

There is no judgement.

Most dog owners have given in to those puppy-dog eyes at some stage, and understanding exactly what Charlie was eating allowed us to build a realistic plan that would actually work.

Rather than creating a restrictive diet that would leave Charlie hungry, we developed a structured weight management programme designed to keep him satisfied while achieving steady, sustainable weight loss.

Rehabilitation Programme

Charlie's programme combined:

Weekly Water Treadmill Sessions

Hydrotherapy was chosen because it allowed Charlie to exercise safely while reducing stress on his joints.

The benefits included:

  • Reduced weight-bearing through the hind limbs

  • Safe muscle strengthening

  • Improved mobility

  • Increased cardiovascular fitness

  • Controlled, low-impact exercise

Structured Weight Management

The nutrition programme focused on:

  • Controlled calorie intake

  • Healthier treat choices

  • Improved feeding habits

  • Weekly monitoring and weigh-ins

Home Exercise Programme

Charlie's owners were provided with guidance on safe exercise to support weight loss while protecting his joints.

Early Results

The response from Charlie and his family has been outstanding.

Within just 13 days of starting the programme, Charlie had already lost 500g, demonstrating excellent owner commitment and early success.

By his fifth hydrotherapy session, Charlie had achieved a total weight loss of 1.4kg.

This represents a significant reduction in the load being placed through his joints every day and provides a strong foundation for continued progress.

Why This Case Matters

Charlie's case highlights an important lesson in canine rehabilitation.

Sometimes the most effective treatment is not necessarily the most obvious one.

Although Charlie was referred for suspected cruciate disease, objective gait analysis showed no active hind limb lameness at the time of assessment. Instead, his excess body weight represented the greatest risk to his mobility, comfort and long-term joint health.

By addressing the root problem first, we have been able to improve Charlie's future outlook while supporting his overall wellbeing.

Owner Feedback

"Charlie is absolutely loving his rehabilitation journey, and we're so grateful for all the support The Suddy Dog Team has given him.

Stephen, Charis and Amanda are absolutely amazing — the love, care and kindness they show him means so much to us.

He gets so excited every time he goes and runs straight in with his tail wagging!

Seeing how happy and comfortable he is says everything about the incredible team there. We honestly couldn't recommend The Suddy Dog enough."

Rehabilitation Is Not One-Size-Fits-All

One of the most important aspects of rehabilitation is recognising that life doesn't always go exactly to plan.

Charlie's original programme was designed around weekly hydrotherapy sessions. However, due to changes in family circumstances, attending every week has not always been possible.

Rather than seeing this as a setback, we adapted Charlie's rehabilitation plan to fit around what was realistic for both him and his family.

At The Suddy Dog Rehabilitation Centre, we understand that every family faces different challenges and commitments. Rehabilitation programmes should support both the patient and their owners, which is why our plans are always flexible and regularly reviewed.

Charlie continues to attend sessions whenever possible, and we remain committed to supporting his progress at a pace that works for him and his family.

Rehabilitation is not a fixed programme written in stone. It is an ongoing process that can be adjusted as circumstances change, ensuring every dog receives the support they need in a way that is practical, achievable and sustainable.

Conclusion

Charlie's rehabilitation journey demonstrates the power of looking beyond the initial diagnosis.

By combining objective gait analysis, clinical assessment, hydrotherapy and a carefully planned weight management programme, we identified the factor having the greatest impact on Charlie's health and addressed it directly.

After five hydrotherapy sessions and a weight loss of 1.4kg, Charlie is already moving towards a healthier, more comfortable future — one tail wag at a time.
